BRISTOL, Va. — Ridgeview and the weather were the big winners Saturday in the Mountain 7 District softball tournament semifinals at Battle Hill.

Third-seeded Ridgeview pounded out 10 hits and got a solid pitching effort from senior Nikole Counts to take an 8-0 win over second-seeded Union in the first semifinal contest.

In the second game, rain and lots of lightning — with threats of more on the way — forced officials to suspend the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with host John Battle leading Gate City 5-0.

The game will resume at 5 p.m. Monday at John Battle with the Lady Trojans (16-3) coming to bat.

The Mountain 7 junior varsity championship will be played after the semifinal between John Battle (16-3) and Gate City (12-7) concludes.

The Mountain 7 varsity consolation and championship games, which were originally set for Monday, now are scheduled to be played Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at John Battle.

Before the rains came and Battle and Gate City took the field, Ridgeview (12-9) shut down Union (11-7).

Counts was solid in picking up the victory. The senior went the distance, scattering four walks, striking out four and walking none.

“Usually, when Nikole goes, we go,” said Wolfpack coach Kent Grant. “When she’s got it going in the circle, it kind of helps us relax a little bit and get a little more focused and relaxed at the plate.”

Counts was solid at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 — a double and a triple.

She got plenty of support from her offense. Fellow senior Bailey Frazier delivered a first-inning, two-run home run to set the tone.

Frazier’s sister Brooke, a freshman, added a two-run homer in the seventh, bookending three Wolfpack runs in the third and another run in the fourth.

Bailey Frazier finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Lauren Rasnick was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Ridgeview, which also got a 2-for-5 performance from Hunter Grant. Grant counted a double and two runs scored in her day.
