Jonathan D. Casey, 21, of Midland Drive in Kingsport, was eventually arrested in Bristol, Tenn., where his GMC got stuck in a field. He faces numerous felony charges.
According to a KPD incident report, shortly before 11 p.m. a patrol officer observed a suspicious vehicle parked outside the Westside Inn, 1017 W. Stone Drive. When police approached on foot to speak with Casey, who was behind the wheel, he allegedly provided the officer with a false name.
"He then put the vehicle in drive and rapidly accelerated out of the parking lot," reads the officer's report. "The rapid acceleration caused the truck's wheels to spin, meanwhile the rear end of the truck was sliding uncontrollably and in the direction where I was standing. I took evasive maneuvers and jumped out of the way.”
Casey fled the scene and ignited an extensive pursuit with speeds reaching more than 100 mph. According to a separate report at the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, police in Scott County also placed felony charges in the incident and were part of the chase leading back onto eastbound Interstate 26 in Kingsport.
KPD Public Information Officer Tom Patton said Casey temporarily exited I-26 and onto Rock Springs Road. There, a Kingsport officer tried to stop the pursuit by spinning out Casey's GMC. The attempt was unsuccessful and the police cruiser was redirected into a utility pole. The officer was not injured, but the squad car suffered extensive damage.
According to the SCSO, Casey re-entered I-26 and later tried to lose officers by taking several side roads. Eventually, he ended up on Highway 126 and fled into Bristol, turning onto Strafford Street near West State Street. After driving into a field, his vehicle got stuck and he was taken into custody. That was a few minutes after midnight, more than an hour after Casey is alleged to have nearly struck the officer at Westside Inn.
In Kingsport, Casey is charged with aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment, felony evading arrest and criminal impersonation. He also had warrants in Sullivan County for violation of probation and introduction of contraband into a penal facility. Additional charges are pending.
