Could God be inviting us to change our minds?

Editor’s Note: With so many churches in our area having to suspend worship services during the coronavirus pandemic, we are asking local pastors to partner with us in bringing a daily message of hope and comfort to readers during this difficult time.

The first public message from Jesus of Nazareth was simple and yet profound: “Change your mind (repent), the Kingdom of God is at hand!” His opening remarks to the world were setting the tone for everything that He would say and do over the next few years. Jesus made it clear that humanity would have to change their mind about God in order to experience His promised rule and reign. Could it be that God is still inviting the world to change its mind about Him?

I think this exhortation from Jesus remains true today. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe God is inviting us to change our minds about many things. Change can be hard, but when we change to align with God, we can trust that it is for our good and His glory!

Here are two areas I sense God inviting us to change our mind in this season:

1. Jesus died for His Church, not many individual churches. I am seeing God change our mind about what it looks like to be many parts of the same Church. That we are individual parts that make up one body in which Jesus is the head. God is inviting us to change our mind about being separated by denomination, race, income, gender, doctrine, etc. and, instead, to unite together under the name of Jesus!

2. God is bringing revival through family. Family was God’s idea from the very beginning and family will remain God’s plan for eternity. I believe God is restoring the value of family through this season of quarantine. He is inviting us to change how we think about our schedules, our commitments, our priorities, and our quality family time so that we don’t miss out on some of the most valuable gifts He has given us — friends and family.

What “change of mind” is God inviting you into during this challenging season? Take a few moments to ask God what He is inviting you to change your mind about — remember that His kindness leads us to change our mind (repentance)!
