Lady Hilltoppers ride surge into regional semis

JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill broke open a close game with a surge at the start of the fourth quarter, and the Lady Hilltoppers worked their way to a 69-58 win over Cocke County in the Region 1-AAA girls basketball quarterfinals Friday night at The New Gym.

Science Hill (25-7) won its 14th straight game and advanced to Monday’s semifinal game against Sevier County (18-12) at Morristown East with tipoff set for 6 p.m. Sevier County eliminated Dobyns-Bennett 42-27.

In Monday’s other semifinal, set for 7:30 p.m., Jefferson County (24-5) will battle Daniel Boone (19-11).

Alasia Smith totaled 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and two blocked shots to lead the Lady Hilltoppers. Jeila Greenlee contributed 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Science Hill also got 13 points from Erin Egerbrecht, 11 from Jasmin Myers, and seven rebounds from Kat Patton.

Cocke County pulled within four points, 45-41, at the end of the third quarter, but Science Hill opened the fourth by scoring 10 straight and was never threatened again.

Gracie Gregg had 16 points and three steals for the Lady Red (15-14). Camryn Holcomb had 14 points and Sydney Clevenger added 11 points and four assists.


DANDRIDGE — A slow start sank David Crockett’s chances in the Region 1-AAA quarterfinal.

The Lady Patriots held the Lady Pioneers to nine points over the first two quarters.

Alexa Gramman and Makayla Alvey each scored 15 points for Jefferson County. Madee Denton came through with 13.

Zoe Sanders, Emily Trivette and Mackenzie Baldwin finished with six points apiece for the Lady Pioneers.

Region 1-AA


ELIZABETHTON — Elizabethton outscored Cumberland Gap 48-16 from the 1:30 mark of the second quarter and went on to take the Region 1-AA quarterfinal win.

The Lady Cyclones (21-10) advanced to face South Greene on Monday at 6 p.m. in the semifinal round at Grainger.

Kaylen Shell and Kaitlin Bailey each finished with 12 points to lead Elizabethton. Morgan Headrick followed with 10.

Nevaeh Kerns netted 12 points for the Lady Panthers (12-16), who jumped out to an 8-3 lead thanks to an early 6-0 outburst and were up 16-13 at halftime.


GREENEVILLE — The Lady Longhorns, playing without leading scorer Taylor Cox for a second straight game, led 59-58 late in the fourth quarter.

Emmy Miller had a team-best 16 points for Johnson County, which finished the season with a school-

record 23 wins. Sadie Stout scored 13 points and Abby Cornett was on her heels with 12.

Haley Kells had a game-high 24 for South Greene. Kiley Collins scored 12 and Jayden Merriweather closed with 10.

Region 1-A


ROAN MOUNTAIN — Leah Birchfield scored 13 points and the Lady Highlanders rolled in their Region 1-A quarterfinal with Washburn.

Gracie Freeman netted nine points and Jasmine Birchfield had eight for Cloudland, which carried a 29-7 advantage into the halftime break.

Braelyn Coffey had nearly half of Washburn’s total with 14 points.


GREENBACK — Freshman Lyndie Ramsey had another productive offensive night with 21 points to help the Lady Rangers win big on the road.

Macy Ensor added eight points in the victory.

Lily Morton was tops for Greenback with eight points.


COSBY — The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 28-9 lead and cruised to the regional quarterfinal win against the Lady Bulldogs.

Hannah Collins paced Hampton with 11 points in the season-ending loss. Hazen Brumitt added six.

Braly McGaha was the leader for Cosby with 17 points. Leia Good had 11 and Tessa McGaha scored nine.
